Original liner notes from The 1974 Reunion:
The events of this night are intriguing as it is the only known recording session of John Lennon and Paul McCartney playing together after The Beatles breakup; aside from informal and special occasions such as weddings, the collaborations of more than two ex-Beatles were rare after the band's bitter 1969-1970 split, especially between Lennon and McCartney, whose conflict was the most pronounced and long-lived of all.
Lennon was in his lost weekend, separated from Yoko Ono and living in Los Angeles with May Pang, and while producing Harry Nilsson's Pussy Cats Paul and Linda McCartney dropped in after the first night of the sessions -aka the Jim Keltner Fan Club Hour- at Burbank Studios on 28 March 1974.
John Lennon is on lead vocal and guitar, Paul McCartney sings harmony and plays drums (Ringo Starr, who was recording with Nilsson at the time but not present at the session, complained the next day's recording session that McCartney always messes up me drums!, Stevie Wonder sings and plays electric piano, Linda McCartney is on organ, May Pang plays tambourine, Harry Nilsson provides vocals at the end of the session, Jesse Ed Davis is on guitar, Ed Freeman (who was producing Don McLean in the neighboring studio) fills in on bass, and Bobby Keys plays saxophone.
The room froze when Paul walked in, and remained perfectly silent until John said Valiant Paul McCartney, I presume?, and Paul responded Sir Jasper Lennon, I presume? [Valiant & Sir Jasper were characters they both played during an early The Beatles TV appearance skit]. Paul extended a hand, John shook it, and the mood was pleasant but subdued, cordial but not especially warm, at least initially.
