Original liner notes from Montreux Jazz Festival:
The 40th Montreux Jazz Festival marked one of the peaks of the Festival with some of their more memorable one-off concerts to date, including a Tribute to Nesuhi Ertegun the 2nd July 2006. Nesuhi was the head of Atlantic Records jazz division since 1956 and left the world in 1989, and because he was the driving power that let all the label's artist go to the Switzerland festival and make it the jazz festival of jazz festivals since minute zero a tribute to Neshuhi had to include some of the GREAT jazzmen he worked with. That special night included Sergio Mendes, Joe Sample, George Duke, the New Orleans All Star, and the one and only creator of free jazz was chosen to close it, Ornette Coleman.

Ornette Coleman's live appearances through the 2000's and 2010's are quite a mystery, and apart from one or two TV broadcasts of his shows it's almost impossible to even check how many concerts he did play per year -from cero to less than a dozen, for those who want to know-, so we are really proud to release this superb recording (made from the photographer's pit, that night between the special guests seats and the spectators seats) of a now LEGENDARY show.

One of Ornette's latest efforts was his Sound Grammar album recorded live in Ludwigshafen, Germany, on 14 October 2005; his Montreux show -the only time he ever played it- do have an almost completely different setlist (including Following The Sound, Song World, Call To Duty, 911, Taking The Cure, Those That Know Before It Happens and Lonely Woman!) and it's a much longer, energetic show, even if it did start after Claude Nobs stage introduction almost at 1 a.m. of the following day! That's why Ornette might have changed the setlist he originally though -with Turn Around between Matador and Song X- and also added a final encore: Lonely Woman.

This release is dedicated to the memory of jazz master Ornette Coleman, and also to the mastermind of the festival Claude Nobs.
